How we rate sportsbooks

We use a specific checklist to rate all Canadian sports betting sites equally. There are many top sportsbooks to choose from in Canada, and our ultimate goal is to help pick the best one for you.

If you prioritize customer support, you’ll be able to see who does it best from our sportsbook reviews. Want to use the best Canadian sports betting apps? We separate the good from the bad. If a sportsbook bonus is top of your wish list, we compare those and one-off bonus codes and promotions too.

And if you’re not quite sure where to start, that’s OK. Take your time to read, compare, contrast, and check out the verdicts from our expert reviewers.

⭐️ Our verdict

When all is said and done, would our experts recommend this sportsbook, and why? There are many reasons why it might be worth opening an account with a sportsbook (or avoiding it), and we do our best to uncover them for you. We give you this information front and center, then back up our view with a detailed breakdown of the sportsbook’s key features.

👍 Pros and cons

From live streaming to in-play betting and cash out opportunities, most sportsbooks have a suite of great features to make your betting experience better. We explain who has what, who does it well, and who doesn't fit the bill.

💰 Promotions and bonuses

A generous welcome bonus should be a given, but it shouldn’t stop there. Loyalty bonuses, free bets, regular promotions, and more all form part of your experience with a chosen sportsbook, so we judge if they are plentiful and offer real value.

🔢 How to sign up

The first hurdle to clear when starting out on your betting journey is signing up to a sportsbook. We assess each sportsbook’s sign-up process to let you know how easy (or not!) it is to get started.

💸 Welcome offer

Every sportsbook we review has a generous welcome offer, but there’s more to it than that. We check for misleading T&Cs and if an offer represents real value, so you can bet with confidence.

💲 Deposit, withdrawals and payout speed

All online betting sites require a range of secure banking options. We test all the options, from depositing with credit and debit cards and direct wire transfers, to e-wallets and emerging crypto currencies. Even more importantly, we check how long it takes to get your winnings.

🏈 Market coverage and betting options

How competitive a sportsbook’s odds are is a fundamental question any bettor should ask. We compare to see which have the best value betting lines, including how many markets and sports they provide and if they offer live betting. On top of that, we also see if they provide in-game stats and tips to help you make your bets.

📱 App review

Any top online sportsbook needs to have a great app or mobile platform, so you have the freedom to bet wherever and however you want. We test every sportsbook’s app to see if it fulfils all your betting needs.

🕐 Support

Need to get in touch? Locked out of your account? Got a betting question? We put each sportsbook’s customer services to the test and see how they stack up against the competition.

🌍 Reputation and safety

Reputation counts for a lot in the betting industry, but we don’t just take the sportsbook’s word for it. Your money, data, and trust are on the line every time you use an online sportsbook, so we highlight those that are fully licensed and regulated, as well as those established brands who have a proven track record of keeping your details safe.

🍁 Regulation

The sports betting market is opening up across Canada, and we’re here to help guide you through the plethora of operators out there. There are countless sportsbooks available online, but we’ll keep you up to date with those who have been legally regulated, so you can bet with the most trusted in Canada.

How to sign up for a sportsbook

Signing up for a sportsbook is relatively straightforward, regardless of the betting site you have chosen to use. The registration process is largely the same across all reputable betting sites:

  1. Enter your personal information. This will include your real name, home address, email address, and a phone number, with one or both of the latter used to verify your account.

  2. Provide proof of age information and documentation. A digital copy of your driver’s license or your social insurance number may be required for this.

  3. Create a username and password (or PIN) for your account. To keep your account secure, these should be unique to your betting account and not duplicates of login details for other online accounts you already have.

  4. Select your chosen payment methods for deposits and withdrawals.

  5. Make your first deposit. Once the funds have cleared and are confirmed in your account, you’re ready to make your first bet!

Is it safe to bet on sports online?

Provided you bet with a regulated sportsbook and do so within your means, there is no reason why betting on sports online can’t be safe and enjoyable. If you feel that you are starting to experience issues of addiction, excessive betting, or chasing losses, consult your chosen sportsbook’s Responsible Gaming options, which will help ensure that you can keep your betting safe.

Canada sports betting legalization in 2022

Sports betting in Canada is nothing new, but thanks to the legalization of single-game sports betting in August 2021, it is now much easier to create an account and bet regularly on single games or events in Canada.

Bettors have been able to place bets with offshore sports betting sites for years, but they are not directly vetted and regulated by the Canadian government. With the new regulations introduced in Canada, a host of the industry’s biggest names in sports betting have applied for and received licenses to operate as regulated sportsbooks in Canada.

Regulated sportsbooks offer a government-approved level of data and account protection, Responsible Gaming tools for bettors, and strong customer service processes. See our full guide on sports betting in Canada.

Are you taxed on sports betting winnings in Canada?

Good news! Sports bettors placing bets in Canada are not taxed on their winnings. That is because winnings from sports bets are considered “windfalls” by the Canadian government and are therefore exempt from taxation.

The only exception to this rule is for full-time professional bettors, for whom sports betting is their main source of income. So as long as you're betting recreationally, you'll pay no tax on your winnings.

Responsible Gaming in Canada

Betting can be a fun and enjoyable way to enhance your sports-watching experience, but for some it can lead to addiction and other issues. To ensure you are able to bet safely and within your own means, it’s recommended that you choose a sportsbook that offers a good range of Responsible Gaming tools.

These can include a variety of methods to place limits on your betting activity, such as deposit or stake limits, timeout periods, and other tools. All reputable sportsbooks offer these options to help keep your betting fun.

There are also bodies available if you require more information or guidance on responsible gambling. These include the Responsible Gambling Council, Canadian Partnership for Responsible Gaming, and iGaming Ontario. See here for more information on Responsible Gaming.
